USM EVENTS would like to welcome all athletes to the 2009 Gold Coast ITU Triathlon World Championships. The 2009 Championships presents five days of triathlon competition, community activities, evening entertainment programs, corporate events and functions, along with one of the biggest Sport & Lifestyle Expo in the Southern Hemisphere. There are events for everyone, from novice to elite, corporate to lifestyle enthusiasts. Which ever one you choose, we hope you enjoy it, along with your time on the Gold Coast.

DOPING CONTROL

The anti-doping regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) are valid. In accordance with the WADA and Article 5.1 of ITU anti-doping regulations, all athletes affiliated with a National Federation may be subject to In-Competition testing by ITU, the Athlete's National Federation, and any other Anti-Doping organization responsible for testing at a competition or event.

All Athletes affiliated with a National Federation may also be subject to Out-of-Competition testing at any time or place, with or without advance notice, by ITU, WADA, the Athlete's National Federation or the National Anti-Doping Organization of any country where the Athlete is present.

ITU Corporate Teams/Teams Relay Triathlon World Championships presented by The Courier-Mail

There will be two events:

 

Corporate Teams presented by The Courier-Mail
    
A team will consist of three people who will each complete an ‘enticer distance’ triathlon (300m swim / 10km cycle / 3km run) concurrently. The total team time will determine the order of finish.

Corporate Teams Relay presented by The Courier-Mail

A team will consist of three people who will each complete one leg of the Olympic Distance Triathlon (1 member will complete a 1500m swim, 1 member will complete the 40km cycle, and the other the 10km run). The timing band will be passed to the next team member relay style. The total team time will determine the order of finish.

Teams will be able to enter either event within the following categories:

  1. Men’s Corporate Team
  2. Women’s Corporate Team
  3. Mixed Corporate Team

All three team members of the team must be full time employees of the corporate, business, association or organisation.

WETSUIT & SPEED SUIT RULING

Wetsuit Ruling:  The official wetsuit ruling will not be made until 24 hours prior to race start.  ITU rules state the water temperature must be below 22 degrees Celsius for wetsuits to be permitted.

Speed Suit Ruling:  Under ITU Race Rules speed suits are permitted in the age group races but MUST be worn for the entire race.  Speed suits MUST still follow ITU Uniform Guidelines.

ON COURSE PENALTIES

The ITU Gold Coast World Triathlon Championships will be run under ITU race rules and not Triathlon Australia race rules (as per other Australian Triathlon events). The one rule that differs greatly is the Drafting Penalty Ruling. There will be no penalty boxes on course and a penalty will be issued as follows:

  1. When assessed a yellow card, the competitor will stop in a safe manner and follow the instructions of the Technical Official;
  2. If on a bicycle, the competitor will stop in a safe manner, dismount to the outside of the course with both feet on one side of the bicycle, and follow the instructions of the Technical Official;
  3. The Technical Official will the say “GO”, at which time the competitor will continue in a safe manner.

*The Broadwater is an open marine channel at all other times, swimming outside these hours is not recommended.

  • ITU Teams Relay Triathlon World Championships presented by The Courier-Mail
  • ITU Aquathlon Triathlon World Championships (remember you must be a member of your National Federation to enter!)
  • SprintMan – Enticer & Sprint Distances

UNIFORM INFORMATION & GUIDELINES

All athletes competing in ITU Triathlon World Championship Events (excluding Corporate Triathlon) must abide by the ITU Uniform Guidelines

Those athletes competing in the SprintMan Triathlon, Age Group Aquathlon, or ITU Corporate Teams / Teams Relay Triathlon World Championships presented by The Courier-Mail must abide by the Triathlon Australia Uniform Guidelines.

VISA INFORMATION

Visitors entering Australia need a valid passport and the appropriate Visa. Arriving visitors need a passport, incoming passenger card and boarding pass.

The visa category to attend the ITU Triathlon World Championships is a Subclass 421 Sports Visa*. The link to all of the information is below:

This visa is designed for sportspeople to improve the quality of sport in Australia through participation in high-level competition and training with Australian residents. You may require sponsorship for this visa, depending on the purpose of your visit and your intended length of stay.

Generally sportspeople come to Australia to:

  • compete in a specific event or series of events, such as competing in the Australian Tennis Open or PGA
  • be involved in sport under an arrangement with a sporting club to play/coach/instruct for a season, such as playing soccer in the Hyundai A League competition.

Who is this visa for?

This visa is for professional and amateur sportspeople, judges and adjudicators who want to come to Australia to participate in their field of sport.

What does this visa let me do?

With this visa you can:

  • participate in high-level competition or training in Australia
  • compete against Australian residents
  • stay in Australia for as long as your visa is valid
  • bring eligible family members with you

BIKE ASSEMBLY SERVICE

The Official Bike Shop and Bike Mechanic of the Gold Coast ITU Triathlon World Championships, Shortis Cycle & Tri, is offering a bike assembly service for teams and individuals competing in the events this September.

The friendly staff at Shortis Cycle & Tri are willing to work with individual competitors and teams to find the best option for the delivery and collection of assembled bikes.  Please call or email them to discuss which option best suits your needs.

Options might include:

  • Deliver or send your bike to the Shortis Cycle & Tri shop in the week prior to the event.  Your assembled bike can then be collected from the shop in Tweed Heads or collected on site at Festival Village from Wednesday 9th September;
  • Bring your bike with you to Festival Village from Wednesday 9th September and Shortis Cycle & Tri staff will assemble your bike on site;
  • For teams or groups with multiple bikes requiring assembly, please speak with Shortis Cycle & Tri staff about collection and delivery from your team hotel.
